Athens (Lavrio) Ferry Port

Situated on the south eastern part of Greece, Lavrio has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, largely due to the renovation of the port. There are many ferry routes operating from Lavrio – the vast majority crossing to other Greek Islands. The sailings vary greatly in duration, with the shortest crossing lasting around two hours and the longest taking around 14 hours. Lavrio Port is only around an hour drive from the capital city of Athens, so many residents of Athens who wish to explore the Greek Islands by ferry will do so from Lavrio Port. There are taxis available to make the journey from the capital but they are typically fairly expensive, costing around 65 euros. The bus service is much more affordable and is only slightly longer, departing every hour from the city centre. Whilst in Lavrio itself, the port is only around a 15 minute walk from the town centre. There is also a shuttle bus service provided by Cruise Lines costing around three euros for those wishing for a quicker journey. Visitors don’t tend to stay in Lavrio for too long due to the lack of attractions or entertainment in the area, though whilst there it is well worth visiting the largest and oldest amphitheatre in Greece or stopping for a drink in one of the many welcoming cafes.

Psara is a Greek island off the east coast of Greece’s mainland, lying in the Aegean Sea. The ferry routes departing the port are to other islands belonging to Greece, with crossings to Chios and Piraeus ranging from 2 hours 20 minutes to 5 hours 15 minutes.

What is there to do in Psara?

Honest fishermen, one ATM machine and only one small settlement – few places in Europe are as wonderfully simplistic as Psara. The port and fishing industry offer the sole production after the rocky, jagged landscape proved too difficult to cultivate crops, and the relative distance between neighbouring islands means that Psara has remained largely untouched by tourism. Sparsely populated areas and welcoming locals make the island perfect for anyone hoping to escape the stresses of the modern world, especially in the summer when the sun shines down on the golden sands and azure blue waters. Sunbathing and walking are the only two viable pastimes available on Psara, though if you’re looking for peace and tranquillity then that’s all you need. Many choose to grab a bottle of water, put on their hiking shoes and begin exploring the exotic lands, finishing their day by watching the sunset on top of the towering hillside. After a day of fairly strenuous exercise, the restaurants will satisfy any hunger with the exquisite seafood dishes that have become well known around Greece.

How do you get around Psara?

There are no rental car companies and only one petrol station on the island, so travelling in a car can prove quite troublesome. Most choose to walk or cycle.
