Lipari Guide

Lipari Ferry Port

The largest of the Aeolian Islands, an island group off the west coast of Sicily, Lipari is a volcanic archipelago with transport links to Sicily. The only ferry route out of Lipari typically lasts around an hour and heads to Milazzo on the island of Sicily. Most visitors will opine Lipari as a relaxing holiday destination, but for those travelling from neighbouring Aeolian Islands it may seem like a busy, vibrant island. The main town hosts the ferry terminal, and around the harbour, tourists are offered the chance to sample authentic Italian cuisine at the many restaurants dotted around the charming, narrow streets. Aside from food, there are ample shops selling souvenirs and several vintage wine stores offering high quality wine at an affordable price. The town is so aesthetically pleasing that many hours could be spent wandering around the quaint streets, decorated with colourful houses hosting friendly, welcoming locals. For a splash of culture, head to the highly regarded archaeology museum, or to the impressive churches and cathedrals residing around the area. Away from the town, there are rugged coastlines to be explored, hot thermal springs to enjoy and pebble and sand beaches perfect for a relaxing day bathing in the sun. Lipari’s desirability is in its ability to appease everyone who visits. The vast majority of the hotels and apartments are in Lipari Town, therefore it is a relatively short walk to the ferry terminal. Most resorts will book a taxi to the port for their guests, or offer directions for any lost tourists.

Panarea Guide

Panarea Ferry Port

Panarea is a volcanic island north of Sicily, and is part of the eight Aeolian Islands that lay to the south of Italy. Many ferry routes depart the port each day, heading to popular tourist regions belonging to Italy and are supplied by Liberty Lines and Siremar.

What is there to do in Panarea?

Panarea is like a dormant volcano for three quarters of the year that roars into life during the glorious summer months. Head there in the winter and most places will be closed, yet when the sun shines down on the glamourous bars and boutique stores it transforms into a flourishing hub of fashionistas and bourgeoisie. Many tourists come for only a day or two to bask in the shamelessly lavish lifestyle that is synonymous with the island; luxury yachts line the harbour and exquisite sea food is served at the extravagant restaurants. With little to do and even less to see, the island is predominantly used as a getaway for rich jetsetters that long for an escape from the strains and stress of the modern day. Only 300 people reside there permanently, so Italy’s most elegant and fashionable region can oftentimes feel like a secret party where many don’t receive an invite. However, the beauty and style of Panarea is definitely worth sampling, even for only a few days.

How do visitors get around Panarea?

The island is car-free, therefore the only viable option is to travel by foot. Most of the restaurants, hotels and bars are located in fairly close proximity, so it is a comfortable stroll for most journeys.
